Hanalei, Super Maramu 53′

Interview with the Captain — Christine Myers

About the Boat

Why did you choose to buy this particular boat and what else did you consider?
This is our second Amel SuperMaramu. We originally wanted a dedicated cruiser large enough for a family of five that could be singlehanded. Circumstances have changed but she’s still the right boat. We considered Passport, Island Packet and Morris.

What boats have you previously owned?
Amel SuperMaramu, S/V Delos.

What are the features you like most about your boat?
Center cockpit ketch, in-mast mainsail furling, winged keel, ample stowage, engine room, watertight bulkheads.

Where all have you and your boat traveled/Do you have any plans?
S/V Hanalei has traveled to: Bahamas, Cuba, Colombia, Guatemala, Panama, Ecuador.

S/v Delos has traveled to: France, Spain, Turkey, Gambia, Norway, Sweden, England, Ireland, Scotland, Greece, Turkey, Italy, Croatia, Morocco, Netherlands, Madeira, Canaries, Cape Verde, Dominica, Grenadines, Bonaire, Panama, Galapagos, French Polynesia, Tonga, NZ, Cook Islands, Hawaii, US.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
We upgraded all of the electronics, added solar and AIS, and are considering a conversion to lithium batteries.

Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating organizations?
SSCA, Bellingham Yacht Club.

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
Finding European-style (220v/50 Hz) and 24 amp-compatible parts.

Who first introduced you to boating?
David Cohan and Sharon Jacobs on Synergy and Tahu L’ea.

Any recent boating-related purchase you’ve been enjoying (e.g. product/tool/equipment etc)?
We’re looking forward to enjoying our new, modern electronics on the next passage! Otherwise, I’m enjoying being out of the clutches of Ecuadorean Customs.

Do you have any other notable resources you use (apps, devices, etc)?
CHARTS!

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
Hanalei was her original name, so we changed it back. We liked the traditional 7 letter with repeating vowel naming system. Delos was based on the floating island of that name in Greek myth.
