Interview with the Captain — Joe Parker
Why did you choose to buy a Wilbur?
I wanted a classic Down East boat, and Wilbur offers a version with the options we were looking for. Working at CW Hood in which we specialize in Down East boats, I thought it was important to experience what we are working with.
What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this model?
We were looking at trawlers originally and shifted to Down East styles for the classic looks. We looked at several Grand Banks, Sabre’s, and Jarvis Newman’s.
How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing (and what’s the boat’s history if you know it)?
I was looking for a Down East boat for a client, and came across this boat that was right up in Portland Maine. Interestingly, the 2nd owner had her here in Marblehead. She was named ECHO, and I always admired it. It wasn’t until a couple of months after I bought it that I found out it was the same boat. Dion’s Yacht Yard did a major configuration change to it in the 90’s for that owner. They added a second stateroom, and moved the galley to the saloon. This is the layout we were looking for.
Who first introduced you to boating?
My parents were avid sailors, and as an infant I was on the cockpit floor of their 210 out sailing. I guess it’s in my blood…..
What boats have you previously owned?
A SISU 26, Gulfstar 37, Hatteras 58, and Padebco 21.
What are the features you like most about your boat?
We really love the Galley Up option, which gives you the guest stateroom below. I also love the size and layout of the fly bridge.
What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
The boat went through a large renovation project the year before we bought it. New engine room area, new bulkheads, new cabin sole and saloon area. We had the hull Awl-Gripped two years ago, and plan on doing the cabin top and decks soon.
How do you typically use your boat?
We tend to go cruising in Maine or down on the Cape. We are planning on Maine this year, and leaving it there for a few weeks to use on weekends after we cruise.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Wilbur like yours?
Lee Wilbur builds a very sturdy boat, and they run well. It’s not the fastest boat out there but that is by design. They can be very economical to run.
What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
We bought a boat to live on board, and it was named TIMELESS. We liked the name, and kept it, as both boats are Timeless Classics.
