High Hopes, Grady White 22′

Interview with the Captain — Roger Tuveson

About the Boat

Why did you choose to buy a Grady White?
My family purchased our Grady White, High Hopes, in 2005 for a couple reasons. We already owned a 2000 – 26’ G/W Fishing Express, which we loved, and decided that a smaller 22’ G/W would be more suitable for inshore fishing and other local water activities. As we sport fishermen know, Grady White boats are well constructed, very popular, and designed with the the angler in mind.

What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this particular model (and how did they compare)?
Our decision to purchase High Hopes was a simple one in that we purchased our first one from Baert Marine and liked the convenience of its location and sales and service departments.

How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing (and what’s the boat’s history if you know it)?
Both of our G/Ws were purchased new. The larger of the two was sold a few years ago.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
Initially, High Hopes was customized with a deluxe leaning bar with a raw water livewell, portable style head, small swim platform with ladder, forward platform cushions, cockpit bolsters & folding aft jump seats, and a high bow rail. A VHF radio and combination depth recorder/fishfinder & GPS were also installed.

What are the features you like most about your boat?
The features I like about High Hopes are its fishability, hydraulic steering, four stroke 225 HP Yamaha OB, and comfortable bow cushions.

Who first introduced you to boating/sailing?
My father was an avid fisherman and my twin brother and I would accompany him, which gave us a life long attachment to the sport. When I moved to Marblehead in 1964, my landlord Dan Brady, let me borrow his boat on occasion and I decided that I wanted to purchase one for myself and young family.

Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating/sailing organizations?
I have been a member of the Marblehead Yacht Club for many years as well as Boat U.S..

What boats have you previously owned?
Prior to owning Grady White boats, I owned two 19’ Makos. Both were purchased used from their original owners and serviced me well for over 40 years.

How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
My primary use of High Hopes is for sport fishing, but harbor cruises, sitting at our mooring reading, and entertaining guests are other activities. High Hopes was formerly moored in Brunswick, ME (@Mere Point in Casco Bay) and has made the trip by sea to and from MHD on a few occasions.

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
My boat is serviced by Richard’s Marine and her bottom is painted by Kenny Rodgers.

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Grady White like yours?
Many Grady Whites are owned by local boaters as indicated by their ubiquitous presence in local waters. They are built by a company that has a long record or quality and craftsmanship, and I strongly recommend their purchase.

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
High Hopes was named by my older daughter, Kristine, it was my idea to add a striped bass decal. She obviously wanted her Dad to have “high hopes” (even apple pie in the sky hopes) when he went seeking linesiders. I also am aware of Henry David Thoreau’s adage, “Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish that they are after.”
