“I am a fifth generation fisherman…Calvin Beal himself built the boat originally and then it exchanged owners twice before me making me the 4th owner.”
Fifth Generation, Calvin Beal 36′
Interview with the Captain — Mack Kelley
About your boat
Why did you choose to buy a Calvin Beal?
I wasn’t in the market for a Calvin Beal specifically. I was looking for a boat in a certain price range and it fit the bill.
What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this particular model (and how did they compare)?
I looked at a 35 Mitchell cove and a 42 south shore. They were both nice boats. The Mitchell Beal was comparable in size and design for the same price just a little bit smaller. The 42 south shore was bigger but needed more work and a complete engine rebuild or replacement. It also has a split wheelhouse that took up more room than I wanted. Overall the Calvin Beal was the best price and had a better layout.
How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing (and what’s the boat’s history if you know it)?
I knew the previous owner. Calvin Beal himself built the boat originally and then it exchanged owners twice before me making me the 4th owner. I included a picture on her profile from when it was new.
Who first introduced you to boating/fishing?
My father and grandfather.
What boats have you previously owned?
A 37 repco and a few skiffs.
What are the features you like most about your boat?
I love the speed and low fuel consumption. I can cruise an easy 22 knots burning 20 gallons per hour. At wide open throttle I can achieve 33+ knots.
What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
The biggest feature change would be the Cummins qsm11 engine I installed. I have added an aluminum stern table and a radar stand on the roof. I also changed the color scheme of the boat, I’ve made a few changes to my work station layout as well, hauler set up and bait station, And a few new electronics. I plan to do more cosmetic work in the future. Every day it seems like I think of something I could do differently or add.
What’s your homeport?
My home port is Steuben Maine. Dyers bay.
What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
Maintenance wise, oil and fuel filters are located in an easy access point. We do beach the boat out every few weeks to clean the bottom and change our zinks.
Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Calvin Beal like yours?
Great boat and big for a 36. I have been very happy with the boat.
What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
I am a fifth generation fisherman.
Do you fish or lobster commercially?
Yes I am a commercial lobster fisherman. And I occasionally tuna fish.
What’s your favorite game fish (and/or season)?
Do you have a memorable catch (or story from a trip/tourney)?
Catching a tuna on my own boat at the same time my father hooked up and caught a tuna on his own boat just 100 yards away was a great experience.
Have any advice for less experienced anglers/lobstermen?
In any emergency situation just take a breathe and assess the situation. Don’t panic.
Most under-rated piece of equipment or tackle?
Yourself. Common sense and a little know how goes a long way.
Any recent fishing/boating related purchases you’ve been enjoying (e.g. product/tool/equipment)?
I just bought some Durabrite lights for my radar stand and I have been very happy with them.
Do you have any other notable resources you use (apps, devices, etc)?
I post a lot on Instagram under my profile Mack Kelley.
