“The upper salon has a spectacular 360 degree view… [while] the lower salon has a very cozy & classic feel about it that makes you forget that you are on a yacht.”

Essence of Cayman, Custom Vicem 85′

Interview with the Captain – Ron Christie

About the boat

Why did you choose to buy this motor yacht and what else did you consider?
This boat was a custom design and build for the owner who worked with the architect and shipyard.

What boats have you previously owned?
The owner previously owned a 110ft Broward and a 100ft sail yacht.

What are the features you like most about your boat?
As the captain, I love the 2 salons, each brings a unique feel. The upper salon has a spectacular 360 degree view out of large windows which let in great natural light. The lower salon has a very cozy & classic feel about it that makes you forget that you are on a yacht. Both salons make the 85ft yacht feel much bigger than it really is.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
Recently the entire AV & TV systems onboard were upgrades to new HD Smart TVs. A big upgrade from the previous 15-year-old TV’s onboard.

Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating organizations?
The owner belongs to many yacht clubs including Seawanhaka Yacht Club & The Sailfish Club of Florida.

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
As the Captain my biggest challenges range from finding European size parts in the US to finding good, capable, and honest contractors.

Who first introduced you to boating?
As Captain: I was introduced to yachting from an early age in South Africa growing up in a coastal town, my family were very boating orientated. I started working on yachts about 2 months after I finished High School and it has been an incredible adventure. I have been to so many amazing places and had such incredible experiences.

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
All of the owner’s previous boats were also named Essence.

Any recent boating-related purchase you’ve been enjoying (e.g. product/tool/equipment etc)?
We recently purchased a new Inmar 14ft tender and we love it.

Do you have any other notable resources you use (apps, devices, etc)?
I use Navionics on a daily basis.
