Interview with the Captain — Ed Lingel

About the boat

Why did you choose to buy this particular boat and what else did you consider?
We chose this model for it sleek and stylish design, the main cockpit area is very functional, lots of windows that open, the fully opening hard top sunroof, and most importantly to us was the rear sliding glass doors (no Canvas to contend with). The Main Cabin below features a large Galley with more storage that we can fill, a comfortable seating area that can be turned into a bed if needed, all this and 7’ head room. The main cabin quarters are large and open with an island style bed and 2 big closets, and the second state room is equally as impressive.

What boats have you previously owned?
 We have had many boats over the years, starting when were first together in our early 20’s, 1991-19’ Maxum Bowrider, 1979-21’ reinell Cuddy Cabin, 20047-21’ Four Winns H210, 2008-19’ Custom weld Viper Jet Boat, 2010-24’ 650iBR Campion Chase Bowrider, Silverton 322 MY Aft cabin, Regal 3760 Commodore, and now the 2017 Bavaria Sport400.

What are the features you like most about your boat?
 We absolutely love the full size hard top sunroof and the hydraulic swim grid, as well as the big HP Volvo Outdrives that turn this into an oversized speed boat that is capable of 40 Knots, if you really want to spend some money on fuel…

Where all have you and your boat traveled/Do you have any plans?
We have travelled exclusively in the Pacific Northwest throughout the Southern Gulf Islands, Victoria Harbor, many different towns and marinas on the Eastern side of Vancouver Island, as well as Desolation Sound, and the Chatterbox Falls in Jervis Inlet. We are hoping to head upwards to the Broughton Marine Park and further North towards the Hakai Inside Passage this season.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
 We have added several upgrades/changes already including the following; New Garmin XDH Radar, Sonar and Chirp, as well as AIS upgrade to the Factory Outfitted Garmin7412. We eliminated the gaudy main cabin oversized wood table table and added a custom kidney shape Corian table for 2 with a full size matching countertop table, while eliminating the useless electric grill directly behind the captain’s chair. We added 3-Roku Smart TVs, and most importantly, a Highfield CL340 tender with a 20HP Yamaha to help us get around in some of the remote anchorages, mounted on a set of SS Anchor lift tender chocks.

Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating organizations?
We originally joined the Vancouver Powers Squadron, but are not currently members of any clubs.

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
The biggest challenges are just lining up trades and lift space during busy season.

Who first introduced you to boating?
My wife and I purchased our first boat when we were 18, as we lived in the beautiful Okanagan Valley and always wanted to be on the water. 

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Bavaria like yours?
My best advice is to do your research, and make sure the boat is best suited for your personal needs. With so many different manufacturers, different styles and different options it can be a daunting task to really compare 2 boats side by side. Even after owning several boats and being on several other different styles, we still find ourselves wanting some things that our boat doesn’t offer and other things that we have, and others don’t offer. The other very important thing to consider when buying a boat is look very closely at the items that are included as we have found you can find 2 boats that are outfitted very differently, and you can save yourself a lot of time and money getting the boat that already has the things you want, as opposed to adding them later. 

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
Our boat is our sanctuary and because we own a small manufacturing company, we like to use it as our getaway. The Company name is Daequip so we thought we’d play with words and name her Daetrip, using the same font as we use in our day to day business. 

Any recent boating-related purchase you’ve been enjoying (e.g. product/tool/equipment etc)?
Because we like to boat year-round and take off every available weekend, we are planning on adding a diesel heater for the cold days in the winter, and we will be adding a inverter so we can start off early mornings and still enjoy a nice warm cup of coffee without running the generator. 

Do you have any other notable resources you use (apps, devices, etc)?
 I really like the Garmin Active Captain, Navionics, and My Tide Times, along with The Weather Forecast app.
