Casco, Fortier 26′

Interview with the Captain — Jane Clayton

About the Boat

Why did you choose to buy a Fortier?
I wanted a family friendly boat that I could handle myself that felt seaworthy, with classic lines.

What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this particular model (and how did they compare)?
Multiple downeast styles under 30 feet.

How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing (and what’s the boat’s history if you know it)?
I have a good friend that is a yacht broker, and when she helped us sell our Bristol 35.5. I gave her some parameters for if she came across something. The previous owners, who live locally, were buying a bigger boat and had the boat moored in MHD. My friend knew it would be coming on the market and gave me a heads up.  Don’t know much about history other than I  have met the previous owners. So, I would say I have a good yacht broker watching out for me.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
I have not done much but really want a shade structure for the back end area, and would love a built in bench seat with storage to replace the locker.

What are the features you like most about your boat?
I love the open large space, perfect for toddlers and for hanging out.  I really like the hard top for protection from the weather and sun. The bunk area is comfortable and has excellent storage.  But mostly, I love the simple classic styling and handling while underway.

Who first introduced you to boating/sailing?
I would say my parents. I have been sailing and boating my whole life.  Spent summers on an island in Maine where just to go anywhere you needed a boat.

Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating/sailing organizations?
Member of the Marblehead Yacht Club.

What boats have you previously owned?
Misc skiffs, Lightnings, Turnabouts, Optis, O’Day day sailor, San Juan 28, Bristol 35.5. Also, currently own an Eastporter 20 that lives in Maine.

How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
I love to just hang in the harbor and read and picnic, I usually have multiple visitors who “stop by” for a chat.  I also love to just head out to halfway rock and back.  Misery is my favorite local destination.  Both my dogs love to hang out and sniff the air for food smells coming in from the BYC, and guard against cormorants and seagulls…..

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
No challenge with annual maintenance and servicing, but it’s a difficult find for small repairs and maintenance.

Do you have any notable boating resources you use?
I find all the local yards to be awesome.

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Fortier?
Just do it!

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
I spent my summers on Casco Bay in Maine, and it is most definitely my “happy place”. Hence the name!
