About the Boat

Why did you choose to buy this particular boat and what else did you consider?
We just love classic boats, and trawlers in particular, because of their classic look and lines, seaworthiness, and spacious living areas. We looked at a few other trawlers, but the moment we laid eyes on this one, we knew she would be ours! We were well aware that Arthur DeFever trawlers are well-built and reliable, with excellent craftsmanship.

What boats have you previously owned?
Our first boat was a Sea Doo Speedster. Next we purchased a 1983 Bayliner 32, our first live aboard boat. We knew this was the life for us, so we soon were seeking out something larger… our DeFever 44. We also currently own a Boston Whaler Super Sport 15.

What are the features you like most about your boat?
For one, the reliability and craftsmanship. Our outdoor living space (the fly bridge and the aft deck) are absolutely huge for a boat this size, which makes entertaining so easy. We also like that the salon is roomy, the kitchen has plenty of storage, and the aft cabin is quite large with several lockers. Our engine room is the envy of most who see it… the 1988 fire engine red and chrome engines look brand new, and anyone under 5’8” can stand upright in it.

Where all have you and your boat traveled/Do you have any plans?
So far, we have only traveled up the coast to Orange County and to many areas around San Diego. When we retire, we plan on many adventures up and down the coast.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
We’ve updated the electronics and all of the furnishings. We plan to replace our isinglass, install outdoor carpet, upgrade our plumbing, and touch up some of the  wood that needs some love.

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
For us, it’s time. Thus we rely on mechanics, and they are simply too busy to show up timely these days!

Who first introduced you to boating?
Andrea grew up boating and has always wanted one. Serendipitously, the Sea Doo practically fell into our lives, as did our Bayliner several years later!

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a trawler like yours?
For an older trawler like ours, consider the reputation of the manufacturer, pay careful attention to the number of hours on the engine, and note how much love and care has been put into it.

Any recent boating-related purchase you’ve been enjoying (e.g. product/tool/equipment etc)?
Nine speaker, kick-butt, 1500-watt upgraded stereo that we can control anywhere from our phones.

Do you have any other notable resources you use (apps, devices, etc)?
Navionics and YouTube.

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
Andrea grew up in the South, and we raised our kids in Texas. So we decided to bring a southern vibe along with our love of the sea… thus Sea Y’all!
