“My father taught my brother & me to build a 14’ Sears wooden kit boat when I was 12 years old & I‘ve hooked on boating from then on.”

Kemosabe, Pursuit 24′

Interview with the Captain – Gene Loop, owner- Marine Cushions & Canvas, Marblehead MA

About the boat

Why did you choose to buy a Pursuit?
I’ve owned several powerboats over many years of boating & always admired the looks, seaworthy hulls & quality construction of Pursuits. The layout fits how my family uses our boat to daytrip & fish.

What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this particular model (and how did they compare)?
I looked at Wellcraft & Grady White and found that this Cuddy Cabin open cockpit layout provided the best balance of what we wanted in our next boat.

How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing (and what’s the boat’s history if you know it)?
The boat was located in Northport LI & was listed on Craigslist by the original owner. I had set up alerts for Pursuit & it popped up as available. The original engine had been recently replaced with a 5.7L Mag MPI Mercruiser that had 44 hrs. & wasn’t being used much.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
I own Marine Cushions & Canvas and we recovered all the original cockpit vinyl cushions , recovered the cabin cushions in a Sunbrella stripe pattern & built all new canvas Bimini & Isinglass side & wind-screen curtains. I also added a new GPS, stereo & cockpit lighting

What are the features you like most about your boat?
It has a ceramic head, handles the chop well & is a dry boat. The self-bailing cockpit & fold down starboard seats make it comfortable.

Who first introduced you to boating/sailing?
My father taught my brother & me to build a 14’ Sears wooden kit boat when I was 12 years old, & I‘ve been hooked on boating from then on. I learned to sail & race Hobie Cats when stationed at Naval Air Station Corpus Christi TX.

Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating/sailing organizations?
I belong to the Corinthian Yacht Club & Boat US.

What boats have you previously owned?
Starting with my Sears kit boat, I’ve owned a 16’ Thompson lapstrake runabout, a Glaspar G-3 ski boat, a Cobia 18’ outboard runabout, a 25’ Hurricane I/O Cuddy, a 29’ C&C sloop, a 25’ Wellcraft Cuddy, a Mako 21, a Dusky 22 now my Pursuit 2460.

How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
We mostly day cruise from Marblehead to Wingaersheek, Gloucester & into Boston Harbor & up the Charles River.

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
I’m lucky to know many of the local Marine Business owners through my Marine Cushion & Canvas business, but I still like to get my hands dirty sometimes. Sanding & painting the bottom is my least liked chore.

Do you have any notable boating resources you use?
Marblehead & the North Shore have an incredibly talented selection of Marine Professional resources available.

Of course, I encourage all boat owners to contact us at Marine Cushion & Canvas on Google…”We’ll make your Boat LOOK NEW Again!”

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Pursuit like yours?
Choose the size of boat you prefer, consider the maintenance requirements, have it surveyed & look at as many available boats you can find.

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
Tonto always called the Lone Ranger “Kemosabe” it means Faithful Friend in Native American dialect
