Mobile Marine is a marine business offering a variety of services to help boat owners take good care of their boats. The company is located in Little Harbor, adjacent to Little Harbor Lobster Company, and has been around for a long time. “We offer on-water engine repair, hauling and transportation, trailer service, shrink wrap, winterization, engine re-powers, fall winterization, and spring service,” says owner Tanner Lane. “We take the time and care to provide the best serves for our customers.”
“When purchasing a used engine, you should look over the whole engine and check for corrosion or rust,” advises Tanner. “Check the oil to see if it’s clean and has been changed. Service records are also very helpful when purchasing a used engine. Look for new parts that have been installed in recent years. Servicing an engine is important, and oil changes, replacing spark plugs, and water pumps/thermostats should be done regularly. Batteries should be checked periodically and charged weekly.”
“The difference between 4- and 2-stroke engines is that 2-stroke burns oil/gas together to run properly and stay lubricated,” Tanner explains. “Four strokes burn oil/gas while oil is stored in the crank case while an oil pump provides lubrication to the correct areas. A 4-stroke engine has a separate piston stroke for each of the four functions necessary to a spark-ignition engine: intake, compression, power, and exhaust. And a 4-stroke is more environmentally friendly. Regardless of engine, it helps to run fresh water through them every once in a while to keep corrosion down.”
“Oil should be changed every fall before the boat get stored for the winter, or every 50 hours of use, whichever comes first. Zincs should be replaced annually; I recommend in the spring just before launch. The most common problems we see are engine overheating, failing to start either from dead batteries (always keep your batteries full charged) or a bad starter, the safety lanyard is not connected, or the boat is not in neutral. Take care of your engine, and your engine will take care of you.”
Tanner says that he “took over the business from the previous owner, and through hard work and great customer service improved the business. We grew it by offering more services, taking on more customers, and providing great customer service. We have been rewarded by loyal customers, and we’re still growing.
