“We love to take the boat down to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Sometimes we just hang out on the mooring, have a cocktail, and watch the world float by.

Star Wing, Sabre 42’

Interview with the Captain & 1st mate – Robert Herbst and Pamela Herbst (1st Mate)

About the Boat

Why did you choose to buy a Sabre?
My wife and I have admired Sabres for years. We felt that the design, layout, and construction of the 42 was ideal for our cruising plans.

What other kinds of boats did you consider before buying this particular model (and how did they compare)?
We also considered Grand Banks/East Bay models.

How did you come to find/locate her before purchasing (and what’s the boat’s history if you know it)?
We spent a lot of time searching the various “Yacht for Sale” sites, mostly for comparing features and prices of different models. Once we had a pretty good idea of what we wanted, a friend put us in touch with an incredible broker. He sold our Pursuit in record time and introduced us to Star Wing. The boat had been in Hingham, and had only 1 prior owner.

What features/improvements have you added or do you plan to add?
The boat came with just about every useful feature a person could want. The only additions we made were adding a davit to bring our inflatable cruising, and we’re adding a night vision camera.

What are the features you like most about your boat?
The layout makes for comfortable cruising and entertaining.

Who first introduced you to boating/sailing?
Both of us grew up in Marblehead, so getting into boating would have been impossible to avoid. Also, my father was active in racing and often recruited me for crew.

·Do you belong to a yacht club or other boating/sailing organizations?
We belong to the CYC. As a child I sailed in the Pleon program, as did our 2 children, Peter and Stephanie.

What boats have you previously owned?
We have owned several boats over the years. We owned, at various times, a Corinthian, a 17” Boston Whaler, and a 23” Mako.  Our last boat prior to purchasing Star Wing was a Pursuit 3000, named Great Escape.

How do you typically use your boat over the summer, and where do you go?
We love to take the boat down to Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard. Sometimes we just hang out on the mooring, have a cocktail, and watch the world float by.

What is the biggest challenge you have in servicing your boat?
It’s a lot more work to wash and clean than the old boat was.

Do you have any advice for those looking to buy a Sabre like yours?
Get to know someone who is a current owner willing to take you out.

What’s the story behind the boat’s name?
My grandfather was a silversmith in NYC. A great deal of his work can still be found selling on the internet. His trademark was a winged star. We incorporated his trademark symbol into the name Star Wing.
